Drabble: How they shine for you

pafhan:

I got the idea from Bubbles’ post about McDanno dancing, so here it is…

Even though Lori had happily left with their picture in her phone, Steve still didn’t look up. The detective’s smile faded a little as he glanced at his partner. His drop dead gorgeous partner in that tux with a pout of an eight year old, obviously pretending to be fumbling with his phone for no reason. It’s a wonder how the badass SEAL could look ridiculous and ridiculously hot at the same time.

“Hey,” Danny nudged him with an elbow once. “What’s eating you, buddy?”

“Huh? What d’you talking about?”

The innocent look couldn’t fool Danny at all. “Don’t. Alright? You’ve been moping around all evening like someone stole your favorite K-bar collection. What’s wrong?”

With a sigh, Steve shoved the phone back in his pocket and kept his hand there. “Nothing. Just bored.”

“Why? Because the event went too smoothly? No explosion or hostage situation or terrorists unexpectedly showed up for you to tackle and take down in dramatic gunfight?” He looked around at almost empty hall. The music was still playing, but the governor and most of the guests had left long time ago. The event did go smoothly, thanks to the tight security and presence of all 5-0 members who still hung back for a little while longer to fully enjoy their evening now they’re finally off duty.

Steve frowned at him and shook his head with another sigh.

“Is it because your date left early?”

“Cath told me she could spare me only a couple hours tonight.”

“That sucks, man. You guys haven’t met for months and now she’s gone again.”

“Nah, that’s fine. We’re…” Steve paused. Then added, “We’re fine. For a while now.”

Something in his tone told Danny more than he needed to hear. “Oh.”

“Yeah.”

“And back to my question, what’s wrong?” He turned to face Steve and looked straight up into his eyes. They’re dark green tonight. And fucking mesmerizing he almost forgot how to breathe too often for his health in one night.

“I told you I was just bored.”

“No. When you’re bored, you go for a triathlon. You chase a suspect into volcano or drive yourself of a cliff, Evil Kanevil style. You don’t just sulk in a corner, Steven. And when that happens, it means whether you are planning to take over a country or somebody is about to get blown up. So, spill.”

“Fine, fine!” Steve looked away and mumbled, shuffling his feet slightly. “It’s just… you… That suit… And the party… And Lori… And tie… Fucking tie.”

“In English, Steve.”

“You’ve been hanging out with Lori all evening.” He huffed.

“Yeah, and?” This was getting interesting. Danny put the football he’d been holding down on the table next to them and folded his arms across his chest, mirroring Steve’s movement. “You got a date yourself. And I hung out with Lori because Max couldn’t be her escort tonight and I came here solo. So what’s the big deal?”

“And you look like that!”

Danny’s eyebrows almost hit his hairline. “Are you saying you’ve been moody because of me?”

“No! Yes!” Now Steve was looking everywhere but Danny. “You know how many time I heard some ladies, and a couple of guys, in the party talking about how amazing you looked in that suit and that tie?”

He’s not sure whether to smirk or let his jaw hit the ground with the compliment. To be honest, it’s Steve who’d been the center of attention. James Bond. Waiter. Remember? And Danny had trouble keeping his eyes away from his delicious looking partner all night.

“All I could do was seeing you dance with someone else, over and over, Danny. Cath threatened to smack me upside the head if I didn’t man up and ask you too. Yeah, like that was a good idea, especially when we’re supposed to be on the watch.” The pout turned into aneurysm face and then to kicked puppy face in a matter of seconds. “Now the party’s over. And we couldn’t even dance. That’s why I sulk. So go ahead. Laugh at me as you’d like”

No, Danny didn’t laugh. He just stood there. Stunned first, before a corner of his mouth  quirked up.

He held his hand out, palm up. “We can now.”

It’s Steve’s turn to be surprised. His eyes widened at the hand then back to those sparkling blue eyes.

“Really?”

“Yes, really. You goof.”

And they both knew they were not talking just about the dance.

It’s a full-blown grin now, shining just for him. And damn if Danny’s heart didn’t flip. Steve grabbed his hand, made sure to be the lead as they mad their way to the dance floor. Figured. Danny heard a shutter sound from his left and rolled his eyes when he saw Kono and Lori quickly turned their phones away. Then he looked back up to Steve and couldn’t help but gasped.

Seriously, the man was staring at him like he’s seeing a Christmas tree. With decorations and lights on, completed with dozen of presents underneath. And all these times he believed that he’s the only one who was head over heal for his partner.

Huh. Maybe being wrong wasn’t so bad sometimes.

“Shall we?”

Steve tightened their hands together when Danny put another hand on the taller man’s shoulder. Then they started moving slowly with the music.

And smiled.
