Sometimes he clings, wraps himself around Derek and holds on to him tight. Holds on like if he let go Derek would simply cease to be if he let go. He wraps himself around Derek when they sleep, tangling their legs together and an arm thrown over his chest, or forces Derek’s arm around him and holds tight to him there, the warm heat of Derek at his back enough to get him to sleep.
Derek grumbles, low growls vibrating through his chest, but it’s never enough to force Derek away. It’s never pushing him away, it’s never untangling Stiles’ limbs from his own and putting space between them. So Stiles assumes that Derek wants it just as much as he does. That reassurance. And maybe they both have similar reasons for needing it. That closeness. To feel the heartbeat of the one they love there against their chest.
Stiles might still have his dad, but he knows what loss is. And Derek…. he can’t do that again.
So he holds on tight, he wraps his arms around Derek’s neck and presses his face into the hollow at the base of his throat and breathes him in. Feels Derek’s pulse against his lips where they brush against his neck, feels Derek’s arms around his middle hoisting him up off the ground. And he doesn’t let go.
